13 hectares of Peppermint Box Grassy Woodland. POA
BushbankSA has recently purchased a picturesque little block of Peppermint Box Grassy Woodland set amongst the rolling hills of the southern Flinders Ranges, 8.5km north east of Wirrabara and 256 km north of Adelaide.
The property is 13 hectares in size and supports the critically endangered Peppermint Box (Eucalyptus odorata) Grassy Woodland which is nationally listed under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act 1999.
This property, although small in size, is an important acquisition for the protection of this critically endangered ecological community. Peppermint Box Grassy Woodland is only found within South Australia and has experienced a 98% reduction in its distribution since European settlement. Its former range extended from the Flinders Ranges block to the western Murray Darling depression and totalled 900,000 hectares which has now been reduced to 15 000 hectares. Much of the remaining 15 000 hectares is in poor condition, has been improved for pasture and is used for grazing with only 210 hectares currently protected for conservation.
The property forms part of a greater 75 hectare remnant patch of Peppermint Box Grassy Woodland and supports excellent biodiversity for this ecosystem type with 39 native plant species recorded. Species such as Quandong, Native Apricot, Golden Wattle, Vanilla Lilies, Spear Grasses, Wallaby Grasses, Spinifex, Drooping Sheoak, Mallee Box, South Australian Blue Gum and Native Flax are all present on the property.
BushbankSA will place a Nature Foundation SA Heritage Agreement over the property which includes a management plan and a small excise allowing for a dwelling subject to development approval by the District Council of Mount Remarkable.
If you are interested in purchasing this property and securing the protection of one of South Australia’s rarest ecological communities please call Jen St Jack at Nature Foundation SA on 8340 2880.
